IMPORTANT NOTICE

This is meant to be a "free and easy" budget trip. Participants should be relatively fit (for Kinabalu Climb, fitness is essential) with a good sense of humour, and above all, have the right attitude for close travel with others through possibly some trying times. Most definitely, this is not a trip for prudes, whiners, fuss-pots, and other similiarly assorted types! Although every effort will be made to stick to the given itinerary, ground conditions may change and cause some disruption and/or deviation from the norm. Otherwise, have fun!

Mount Kinabalu Plateau and South Peak             .

This trip differs from other KK trips in that we spend two nights in Laban Rata, near the summit of Mt Kinabalu compared to one night on a standard trip. Depending of the group fitness, we may include the longer Mersilau Trail with the normal Classic Trail. The extra night in Laban Rata will offer novice climbers a full day to recover from the climb up before descending the next day. After all the exertions, we fly to Tawau and relax in the beautiful islands of Mabul, Sipadan and Kapalai. These are probably some of the best snorkling/diving sites in Malaysia.

Day 1 KL to KK: Assemble at KLIA early morning for the early morning flight. We charter a local van to take us up to Poring to visit the Hot Springs and Canopy walk. We adjorn to Kinabalu National Park for an overnight in the chalets.
Day 2 Up Mersilau Trail: We gather at Kinabalu Park HQ to begin our trek up the Classic Trail to Laban Rata covering a total of 6kms. Personal porters are available and suggest two participant share one porter, which cost Rm110 for 2 nights. We spend the night in heated dorms in Laban Rata 3290m.
Day 3 Peak Mount Kinabalu: We wake up at 3am, breakfast then begin the final ascent 2.6km to the peak 4095m to greet the dawn at 6am. We come back down to Laban Rata and do short walks around the vicinity. Those with excessive carbohydrates can attempt other peaks in the vicinity. Overnight Laban Rata Resthouse.
Day 4 Descend: We leave early possibly at 7am to the Park HQ. Our transport will then take us on the 2 hours drive to Kota Kinabalu for refreshments before our 630pm flight to Tawau. From there, a local van will transport us to Semporna where we overnight at Dragon's Inn.
Day 5 Off to Sipadan: At 8am, a speedboat takes us to Sipadan Island 1.5hrs. Here we snorkel and have lunch. One can also do a 30mins walk round this small island. In the early evening, we boat to Mabul Island 20mins, which is a small island with a fishing community complete with police station and school. We'll sit on one of the jetties to watch the sunset before retired to our homestay in Mabul. (Note that accomodation on Mabul is basic wooden house on stilts over clear seas in a working fishing village. All meals on this island trip is provided).
Day 6 Kapalai Island: We boat to Kapalai Island 15 mins from Mabul. Its actually an an atol and has the best snorkeling in the area. We expect to leave Mabul by about 4pm to return to Semporna for overnight stay in Dragon's Inn.
Day 7 Semporna Island Hopping: In the morning we visit the town's market with its interesting array of fresh seafood and local produce. Later, we board a wooden local boat and cruise to the other islands of Semporna, which include a visit to a seaweed farm. Late afternoon we proceed to Tawau Airport for our 830pm flight home.

The famous 600m deep Sipadan Dive Wall is just behind me
